I wanted to learn about how it the countryside is managed, and one day contribute to managing it myself.

Final year student Amelia Marshall reflects on her time at Harper Adams studying Environmental Land Management.

I really enjoyed geography at school, but I wanted a degree that wasn't just 'geography'. I grew up in the countryside, so I wanted to learn about how it is managed, and one day contribute to managing it myself.

Harper Adams was attractive not just because of the course, but because of its rural location and the opportunity to complete a placement year.

It was definitely the right choice. I love talking to and getting advice from my lecturers. And have had several great experiences.

A memorable highlight was in first-year, when we spent a week in Slapton at the Field Studies Council centre as part of our Introduction to Ecology. We were able to complete a variety of surveys in woodlands, freshwater, and marine environments.

We also went to the Eden project. The week was full-on, but one I will remember for years to come.

I became great friends with my coursemates, too. Harper Adams is a really friendly environment. The accommodation is good, and the surrounding area feels like a safe place to live, unlike cities. I also like the free parking on campus!

When employers ask which university I went to, and I reply with Harper Adams University, it makes me feel unique and that I chose to put time into finding a course that is right for me.

Amelia, from Northampton, loves hiking, camping, and travelling. She has completed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, currently working towards the King Scout Award and is also a fully qualified First Aider. She is preparing to graduate in summer 2025.
